(Psa 18:11) He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
The apostle John wrote that God is light and that in Him there is no darkness at all (1Joh 1:5).
David wrote that God is a sun and a shield (Psa 84:11)
The prophet Isaiah wrote that unto thee God shall be an everlasting light (Isa 60:19).
Isn't it ironic, isn't it just like our God, isn't it just like the God of light, isn't it just like the light of men, that we might find Him within the darkness of our lives?
The ways of our Lord God are clearly higher than our ways and His thoughts are obviously higher than our thoughts, that the light is always present yet hidden within darkness.
Scriptures tell us that the man who dwells within "the" secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psa 91:1).
The idea of a hiding place, a secret place, is one that is spoken of often by David, and it is clear that He had unfettered access to it for he often found himself within the darkness of this world and yet always within the presence of God who always delivered him from the darkness.
Many of us, myself included, tend to view the "troubles" that we experience in life as darkness, yet these are the very times which we draw closer to God because it is within these times of darkness when we earnestly seek the light (of truth).
(Exo 20:20) And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
(Exo 20:21) And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
The people were afraid of the darkness but Moses knew that only by drawing near to the darkness can one find the light of God!
How many of us run from the darkness rather than draw near to it?
How many of us try to avoid our problems rather than meet them head on?
How many of us forget that our God is ALWAYS with us, even in the darkness?
When did God send His prophets into the world?
When did Jesus enter into the World?
When the world was in great darkness!
When will Jesus return to the world to establish His kingdom?
When the world will be in the greatest darkness of it's history!
The light of God always comes out of the darkness because that is where He is!
Solomon said that the Lord told him that He would dwell in the thick darkness (1Kin 8:12). David said that clouds and darkness are round about Him (Psa 97:2).
Now Watch This
(Joh 1:5) And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Men (and women) often do not understand the darkness of their lives. We tend to view our darkness as condemnation or punishment rather than our proving. We do not understand that to find the light we must go into the darkness.
Look at what the apostle James has to say about this subject:
(Jas 1:2) My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
(Jas 1:3) Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
(Jas 1:4) But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
(Jas 1:5) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
(Jas 1:6) But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
(Jas 1:7) For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
(Jas 1:8) A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
The word "temptations" is derived from the Greek word πειρασμός - peirasmos which means "a putting to proof".
God sends darkness to prove us, to try our faith, to work our patience, because the strengthening of our patience makes us perfect in our faith that we might ask God for wisdom in the midst of our darkness and find the light within it!
We are to count it ALL joy when we fall into darkness because we know that God is about to reveal Himself, or His wisdom, or His understanding to us through it!
What is this "secret place" within the darkness?
The Place of Faith!
The Secret Place
