Based on 1 John
(1Jn 1:5) And this is the message which we have heard from Him, and we proclaim to you: God is light, and no darkness is in Him, none!
(1Jn 1:4) And we write these things to you, that your joy may be full.
This is a very powerful message which was spoken to John and given to us through him, by the Holy Spirit of God, that our joy may be full. Halleluiah!
What ever is being said here it is going to fill (plēroō to cram) us with joy. I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to receive this word!
(1Jn 1:5) And this is the message which we have heard from Him, and we proclaim to you: God is light, and no darkness is in Him, none!
From the beginning of time there has been darkness and light. And God “divided” (bâdal – separated by making a distinction between the two) the light from the darkness (Gen 1:4). God divided them. He separated them. They are distinct one from another and can’t be joined together. Therefore either we walk in the darkness or we walk in the light. We can not bounce from one to the other even if we wanted to. We walk either in the darkness or the light. We can’t serve two masters (Matt 6:24).
(1Jn 1:6) If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and we walk in darkness, we lie and are not practicing the truth.
(1Jn 1:7) But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of His Son Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.
Here it is brothers and sisters, the gold nugget!
BUT if we walk in the light, as He (God) is in the light, we have fellowship with one another (as children of the light) and the Blood of His Son Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. Halleluiah!
How do we walk in the light and become sons of the light?
We believe in the light! We have faith in the Light. By faith we are justified.
How are we cleansed from sin? The Blood of Jesus!
Brothers and Sisters this cleansing is not a one time event. It is continuous. It goes on 24 hours a day seven days a week and is never ending!
How do we know this?
The blood of His Son “cleanses” us from “all” sin.
In the Greek this verse is phrased “is cleansing”. The Greek word being used here is katharizō means continuous cleansing.
Now we know that Jesus died on the cross as the atonement (to pay the price) for our sins. And we know that because we have been cleansed from sin we stand righteous in the sight of God because of His blood. And we now know that this cleansing is a continuous process.
Why then do people believe and teach that we must do something to be cleansed from sin to be made righteous in the site of our Father in heaven?
Because they take 1John 1:9 totally out of context!
(1Jn 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
We are taught to believe that every time we sin that we must “confess” our sins to be cleansed from them based on this verse of scripture. Now either this verse (1Jn 1:9) is being taken out of context or there is a contradiction in the word of God. Which we know can’t be. Therefore the issue must be contextual.
If John 1:7 tells us that the blood of Jesus is constantly cleansing us of “all” sin, then how can v.9 be saying that we are cleansed only after we confess our sins?
Further more 1 John 2:1 states that if we do sin we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the High Priest, making intersession for us. An advocate, by definition, is someone who pleads the case of another in a court of law.
Now if we have scripture telling us that the blood of Christ is continuously cleansing us of “all” sin and another verse telling us that Jesus is standing before the Father as our High Priest and advocate making intersession for us, how then can 1John 1:9 possibly mean that we must go before the Father and confess our sins in order to be forgiven?
It doesn’t mean that at all!
Let’s look at what that verse means in context with the rest of the chapter.
(1Jn 1:8) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we “say” that we have no sin, the truth is not in us (we don’t have the light).
(1Jn 1:10) If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.
If we “say” that we have not sinned, His word (His light) is not in us.
(2Pe 1:19) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; where unto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
These two verses 1John 1:8 & 10 are the bread, verse 9 is the meat in between them.
(1Jn 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If we “confess” our sin He is faithful to forgive our sins. Why? Because we are walking in the light and there is no darkness within us! Because we are children of the Light. Also notice that the verse does not say “if we confess our sins to God” or to the Father. It simply says that if we generally proclaim that we are sinners, rather than “say” that we are not sinners or that we do not sin, the Father is faithful to forgive us. The word faithful, pistos, used here, and in context, means that He is trustworthy to keep His word and that we can have faith that when we “confess” the truth that we do sin, He will keep His word, which states that as children of the light, we are being cleansed continuously by the blood and that the price of our sins have been paid for by the blood and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Glory to God in the highest!
Now Watch This:
1) If we “confess” (homologeō – acknowledge) our sins, He is faithful to forgive us. What this means in context with the preceding verse and the verse which follows it, is that must not deny that we sin.
2) If we “say” “that we have no sin” or “have not sinned” we are in the darkness (“there is no truth in us” – “His word is not in us”).
1John 1:9 is not saying that confession is a prerequisite for the forgiveness of sin, it is saying that we must not deny that we do sin! It is literally saying that when we “acknowledge”(say) that we do sin, when we admit to ourselves and others that we are human and do fall and do sin (fall short of the mark or miss the target), that God is faithful to forgive our sins (through the continuous cleansing of the blood of our Lord Jesus (the lamb of God)!
There is, in the old testament, something called “the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing” found in Leviticus 14 which serves as a good illustration here.
(Lev 14:6) As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water:
(Lev 14:7) And he shall sprinkle upon him that is to be cleansed from the leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird loose into the open field.
Now Watch this:
The Cedar Wood (the cross of Christ was made of ceder wood)
The Scarlet (Jesus robe)
(Mat 27:28) And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
The Hyssop (was given to Jesus at the cross)
(Joh 19:29) Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
All of these things had touched the blood of Jesus.
Then the sprinkling was done seven times for cleansing (Lev 14:7).
Jesus blood was spilled seven times:
1) Mark 14:65 – Jesus struck with the palm of a hand.
2) Mark 15:19 – Jesus struck on the head with a reed.
3) John 19:5 – Jesus crowned with thorns.
4) John 19:1 – Jesus is scourged.
5) Nail in Jesus hands.
6) Nail Jesus in feet.
7) John 19:34 – Jesus side pierced by sword
After the sprinkling was done seven times the leper was “pronounced clean”.
Also found in the old testament is “the trespass offering”, found in Leviticus 14, the blood of which was used for purification and is both interesting and applicable to this study.
The first thing that is note worthy is that “the priest” does all of the cleansing rituals. Who is our High Priest? Our Lord Jesus Christ!
The next thing is that this blood is applied to three areas; the tip of the right ear , the thumb of the right hand and the great toe of the right foot (v.14).
Then the priest takes the oil in his left hand and using his “right” finger sprinkles it before the Lord “seven times” (v.16).
The priest then takes the oil and applies it, covering over the blood that was first applied, to the right ear, finger and toe of the person being cleansed (v.17).
Now lets take a little closer look at what is happening here.
The blood of the sacrificed ram was put on the tip of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand and the big toe of the right foot. The blood was used to cleanse these areas in preparation for the anointing.
Then the oil was sprinkled upon these same parts and their garments so that they “shall be hollowed” (qâdash – made holy, set apart). The blood cleansed them and the oil anointed them. This process made them clean & holy! But the price for their sin had not yet been paid for!
Subsequently “the priest” offers a “sin offering” and it is the priest who is to “make an atonement (pay the price – settle the account).
(Lev 14:19) And the priest shall offer the sin offering, and make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed from his uncleanness; and afterward he shall kill the burnt offering:
Now Jesus blood was spilled seven times on the day He was put to death on the cross. That was the fulfillment of the trespass offering. He then ascended into heaven to sit at the “right” hand of the father and assume his place of High Priest of the order of Melchizedek. That fulfilled the “sin offering”
The Blood of Christ took care of our being cleansed from sin once and for all time. His death on the cross paid the price (made atonement) for our sins for all time. His being commissioned, by the Father, to the status of High Priest and His advocacy for us gives us imputed righteousness forever.
Now this is not, as most legalistic people profess, a license to sin. Those who accept this mercy and grace “given” to us from our Father through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, are new creations. We no longer have the desire to sin within us. God writes His laws onto the fleshy tables of our hearts. We are not hearers of the word only, we are doers of the word. We are living walking and talking epistles
(2Co 3:2) Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
(2Co 3:3) Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
(2Co 3:4) And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:
(2Co 3:5) Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;
(2Co 3:6) Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
Yet again the final question here is; do we believe man or the word of God?
- The word says we are forgiven of our sins when we accept (believe in) the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, our High Priest, who made atonement for all of our sins.
- The word says that the Blood of Jesus blood continues to cleanse us day and night.
- The word says that if we do sin that we have an advocate, Jesus Christ, pleading our case to the Father for us.
- The word says that if we “say” we do not sin we don’t have the truth in us but if we say (confess) that we sin we walk in truth and are children of the light.
There is nothing that we can do to make ourselves righteous before God. There is nothing we can do to cleanse ourselves for our sins. There is nothing we can do that can atone for our sins.
This has all been done for us by our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.
Receive it, believe it, give thanks and praise to Almighty God and His Son Jesus Christ for it. Amen!
(Joh 12:36) While you have the Light, believe into the Light, that you may become sons of Light.
(1Jn 1:8) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
(1Jn 1:9) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous that He may forgive us the sins, and may cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(1Jn 1:10) If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.
Those who are in fellowship with God do not walk in darkness because there is no darkness in Him. And because Jesus is in us and He is in the Father, and the Father is in the Son (John 17) we walk in the light because the light is in us.
When we receive Jesus the Christ as Lord and Savior, we “believe into the light”(John 12:36) that we may become sons of light.
(Joh 1:12) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
In closing; God desires that we make known the truth that although we are saved, we are sinners and are no better or worse than the unsaved if not for the blood of Jesus The only reason that we can stand righteous in the site of God is because He sees us through the blood of Christ. Not through our confessions to Him of our sins.
What happens is we forget to confess a sin? What happens if we die before confessing our sins? Do we stand unrighteous before God? Of course not! Our righteousness has nothing to do with us. It’s all about Jesus!
We can’t have it both ways. Either our sins are forgiven or they aren’t. Either the blood of the lamb washes us clean or our confession does. We must learn to keep scripture in context, receive what it says and stand on that word with all of our faith!
God Bless You All
